South of the Border

Another Sunday and autumn feels like it’s really here. Chilly wind, spitting rain, and dark grey clouds. A perfect night to stay in with a warming cocktail — ah, inspiration!

This cocktail features two alcohols from warm, sunny Mexico. Though I grew up in the 80s, kahlúa is not one of my go-to liqueurs, probably because I don’t care that much for coffee. But this cocktail definitely turned my head and could make me a believer. And how can you go wrong with tequila? Here’s what we poured.

Ingredients

For each serving, combine the following in a cocktail shaker:

  • 1.5 oz. tequila
  • 1 oz. Kahlúa
  • 1 oz. fresh lime juice

Shake ingredients with 4 or 5 ice cubes. Strain liquid into chilled glasses. Serve with a lemon twist.

The verdict: Two thumbs up, one thumb down. This cocktail separates quickly, so be sure to give it a quick stir before serving or the first sip may be excessively lime-y. The overall flavour is tangy, warm, and complex — and very sippable: you’ll likely want another. Enjoy!
