It was a long hot summer day and I wanted something light, refreshing and…well…easy. So I settled on a spritzer and did a little research to see if there were any variations I hadn’t tried yet.
I found a bunch of different recipes but the one that called for bitters intrigued me. We had a bunch of the Orleans bitters left from the Sazerac that we hadn’t found any other use for, so I decided to give it a try.
Ingredients
- 3 oz of aromatic white wine (I chose a Piesporter Riesling)
- 1 oz club soda
- 2 dashes Orleans bitters
- 1 lime slice
Chill the wine. I mean really super chill it. Almost frozen… And make sure the club soda is really cold too. Pour the wine (around 3:1 ratio), top up with the club soda, two dashes of bitters and then top with a slice of lime.
Verdict: I loved the bitters. It added just a hint of je ne sais quoi (although honestly I am pretty sure it was anise…). It hit the spot and received 4 thumbs up. And I definitely am going to look into experimenting with bitters in more cocktails.
