The Gin Fizz

As a child, my father was especially fond of gin and tonics. Needless to say we never sneaked sips from his drinks. Later I discovered that the unique bitterness of gin could be a perfect salve on a hot summer day. So on a quiet hot afternoon in the beauty of one of Canada’s national parks, it seemed like a perfect time to try out a Gin Fizz.

Ingredients

  • ginfizz-2juice of 1/2 lemon (freshly squeezed)
  • 2 oz gin
  • 1 tsp fine sugar
  • club soda

Shake gin, lemon juice and sugar with ice and strain into a highball glass over a couple of ice cubes. Fill with sparking water, garnish with a slice a lime and serve.

The verdict: Cool, tart and refreshing — a pretty simple drink to whip up and a great way to chase away a hot summer afternoon. We left the highball glass at home so they might have been bit more potent than usual, but a perfect cocktail nonetheless.
