The Paloma is a classic tequila highball everyone should try: just tequila with the addition of grapefruit soda, lime juice, and maybe a pinch of salt. But since tequila is a Halloween tradition, we decided to try a little harder. The Paloma Brava is a variation on the classic that is bit more complex, but with a lot of flavour. And, since we’ve been indulging in high alcohol/low volume cocktails for the last while, it was nice to have something you could relax with while enjoying something bright and refreshing.
Ingredients
- Pinch of salt
- 1 1/2 ounces reposado tequila
- 3/4 ounce fresh lime juice,
- 2 ounces fresh orange juice
- 6 ounces fresh grapefruit juice
- 4 ounces grapefruit soda
- Agave nectar to taste
Start with a large glass with ice. Add salt, tequila, lime, orange and grapefruit juice. Stir. Top up with grapefruit soda and add agave nectar to sweeten as needed.
The verdict: I liked it. I liked it a lot. Surprisingly with all that mix, you could still taste the quality of the tequila and it made a great start to the evening. There was a refreshing sweet/tart balance that you could adjust to suit your preference. And as a bonus it was a four-thumbs-up drink, with the entire group approving of the choice and willing to schedule it for another try.
