Dark & Stormy

The Dark and Stormy (aka Dark ‘n’ Stormy, a proprietary name) is often associated with hot coastal climates. This cocktail has been described as the (unofficial) national drink of Bermuda and a favourite among yacht owners. In chillier regions, it’s more often associated with autumn, Thanksgiving, and the coming of winter — and it’s through our northern media that we stumbled on this cocktail, which perfectly suited the return of one of the fold from a month-long sailing voyage.

The essence of this cocktail is dark rum. We opted for a demerara rum, which we felt would complement the spice of the ginger beer.

  • 2 oz. Lemon Hart rum
  • 4 oz. Crabbie’s Ginger Beer

Mix the rum and ginger beer in a cocktail shaker and mix quickly. Pour into a highball glass filled with ice. Garnish with a lime wedge.

The verdict: If you have aspirations of becoming a pirate, this drink might help you fulfill them: it really packs a punch. Initially we didn’t taste the ginger beer, but as the ice melts, the beer flavours come forward more. We certainly agree that this cocktail would be pleasant on a hot afternoon aboard our sailboat. We’ll have to try it again then.
